Built between 1908 and 1912 by a German mining company for the workers of the Giesche coal mine, Nikiszowiec was designed to be entirely self-sufficient, school, hospital, bakery, church, swimming pool, police station, all within its red-brick walls. It was built to keep miners close, productive, and dependent. Walking through its arcaded courtyards today, it still feels like a closed world. People still live here. Laundry hangs between the windows. The Church of St. Anne anchors the square. We walk it slowly, talk about who lived here and what their lives looked like.

The Guido Mine was sunk in 1855 by Count Guido Henckel von Donnersmarck to fuel his steel mills. We collect helmets and lamps, pass through the dispatch room where miners checked in before every shift, and descend in the original elevator. The first level tells the story of early 20th-century mining: the use of pit horses, the constant threat of gas and collapse, the cult of St. Barbara the miners’ patron. Her chapel at 170 metres is one of the most unexpected things you’ll see on this trip, neo-Gothic brick and steel in the dark, underground.

We descend further to 320 metres, the deepest accessible point in any tourist mine on the continent. The temperature holds at around 15°C year-round. We ride the suspended electric railway through the tunnels, see the full-scale mining machinery demonstrated in operation, and understand how the technology of extraction evolved from pickaxe to combine.

The tour ends at Pub Szynk, built inside the old pump hall that once kept the mine from flooding. Raw brick vaults, original workings, and Guido, an unpasteurised Silesian beer brewed in Gliwice. We eat, drink, and sit with everything we’ve seen. Nobody is in a hurry to go back up. Then we take the elevator to the surface and drive home.

Back above ground and back to Kraków to arrive late afternoon.
