Kraków was once ringed by over 100 military forts. Most people have no idea they exist. We spend a day finding them.
The route moves through places that don’t appear on tourist maps and aren’t waiting for you with information boards and gift shops. An abandoned quarry, a hilltop fort that has served as a barracks, a prison for French POWs, and for decades after the war, ordinary family apartments. A prehistoric mound rising above the city with a view that stops you in your tracks. And two forts in the outer ring, unrestored, unsignposted, and left exactly as time and neglect have made them. Low ceilings, dark corridors, whatever the last visitors left behind. Every group finds something different out there. We leave it at that.
Midway through the day we surface for a zapiekanka, the toasted open baguette that has fed Kraków since the communist era, eaten somewhere local and unhurried. Then we go back in.
The day ends at the guide’s home with homemade cake and something to drink. It’s the debrief that only happens after a day like this, everyone comparing what they saw, what they found, what they’re still not sure how to explain.
Some of these places are genuinely rough. Broken glass, graffiti, dark interiors, the kind of atmosphere that comes from years of nobody caring. Wear shoes you don’t mind getting dirty and come with curiosity rather than expectations. This is not a history tour, it’s an exploration trip for people who like their experiences unscripted and their forts unpolished.
We start at the best-preserved fort in the ring, a proper military history museum that gives you the context to appreciate what comes next.
